Why is there so much controversy about Yip Man not passing on the full system of Wing Chun?

Did he pass on the full system to his students?

Answer: That's a great question. I'm curious to hear what the community has to say.

Ip Man taught for a long time and
by: Anonymous

I think it may be because he taught for so long and had many students.

Each student trained with him at different points of his life.

Like those famous painters, who have different periods in their careers. Sometimes happy, sometimes dark.

I'm sure if you studied painting with them, you'd get a different lesson based on when or what point in the painter's life you studied.

That's my two cents, anyway.

ip man passing entire system?
by: kat comshaw-arnold

if ip man simplified the wing chun system and then passed on his simplified, or distilled, system, then OBVIOUSLY there are parts that have been left out.

incompleteness
by: Huitzyl

There is no such thing as a complete system, the ultimate purpose of a martial arts master is to transfer the search for the completeness itself.

So the principal matter here is whether the students really understood the true significance of the teaching.

Bruce Lee is a clear example of this concept, he spent his life in the development of himself, that is, the development of the martial art.

Those who claim to possess the completeness are static, without movement, dead in the true martial art.

All this of course, represents only my opinion. (i ask for apologize for my rough english)

One of the reasons....
by: Anonymous

1. Ip Man simplified the wing chun learning system. So he made some modifications in order to make his students understand quicker than the traditional way.

2. Most lineages came from Ip Man, by meaning... Nobody knows which is the traditional wing chun kung fu, or those modified by Ip Man... Hence many did suspect that Ip Man didn't pass the "real wing chun"

Yip Man's Wing Chun
by: yáng guǐzi

Yip Man is said to have withheld parts of the wing chun system from his commercial teaching by William Cheung, one of his most advanced students. This is apparent when you compare someone's forms and applications of Yip Man's lineage with someone from another lineage, as certain aspects e.g. rattan rings, gun sticks the attributes of the Chinese elements, are generally not included in the Yip Man lineage. However, because there is a certain, shall we say, "limited" western mentality which cannot abide the thought that an individual's wing chun as practised for the last 10 to 20 years may be incomplete, they are loud, derisory and rude about other lineages... and that is the state of wing chun politics in a nutshell.
